Jill Wilkinson is a multimedia artist who knows the value and beauty of handcrafts. Many of her color photographs show an appreciation for a world which crosses both art and craft. Those photographs, and other media she has created, are on display at the Cody Center northeast of Leakey, Texas. Other fascinating items on display include jars of miscellaneous items, framed abstracts on paper, baseball cores and unframed collages. She has the vision and ability to show appreciation of everyday items amid simple presentations.
I’ll limit my comments to her color photographs, many of which show a clear appreciation crafts. One photograph, Weaving Telephone Wires, shows the assembly of a hat using – you guessed it – telephone wires. “Throwing A Bowl” depicts a hand working with pottery in Japan. “Fingers & Threads” is another example of her passion for craft.
Much of Jill’s work shows a fascination with the human hand, possibly because they are organs responsible for creating the craft items that also fascinate her. Witness, for example, “Bhudda’s Hand With Calligraphy Brush” or “Cassie’s Hands With Camera and Tickets.”
